| | Learn more about our school | Friends Education The belief that there is something sacred in us all dwells at the very heart of Friends education. The "Inner Light," as it is often called, guides teachers and students in their pursuit of simplicity, equality, and personal truth. Nurturing rather than dogmatic, a Friends school challenges students to reflect upon and articulate their conclusions about firsthand experience in the classroom and outside of it. Student-centered classrooms and a proactive mentoring system encourage children to grow into conscientious scholars and socially aware people.
As part of our Friends tradition, all students participate weekly in Meeting for Worship, an opportunity to gather in silent reflection and to share thoughts with the community. Each individual is entrusted with equal responsibility for the success of the Meeting. During Meeting, some may worship or pray, some may ponder a personal problem or joy, some may try to connect with a higher power, others may simply listen and enjoy the power of silence. Students and faculty routinely comment on how they appreciate this space each week to stop and reflect, while alumni frequently cite their experiences in Meeting for Worship as among the most powerful, and missed, memories of their school days.
Teachers often use silence as a valuable centering and focusing technique in the classroom. Lower and middle school classrooms usher in the day with five minutes of silence, while all formal meetings and assemblies in the upper school begin and end with silence. |

 | The Setting On one peaceful campus, Moses Brown School includes three developmentally distinct schools: lower, middle, and upper. While each school follows its own specific, age-appropriate academic mission, the three schools carefully coordinate their efforts with respect to thoughtfully sequenced goals. In the end, students graduate with the academic, social, and intellectual skills necessary to thrive in college and beyond.
Small classes (with a student-teacher ratio of 8 to 1) provide the setting for genuine dialogue and a spirit of collaboration. Educators quickly recognize their students' individual strengths, passions, and needs. Students learn to rely on their own thinking, while their power to express that thinking grows. In a small classroom a teacher can help a first grade student "write" his first book. A middle school Spanish teacher can conduct her final examination via a telephone call to each student, conducted entirely in Spanish. A group of juniors can design and lead a meaningful "Harkness Table Discussion" on Song of Solomon. In each case, the small class affords the teacher an opportunity to tailor learning to the strengths and abilities of each student.
