5th grade explores human rights

By Ana Weiner, 5th grade teacher

During the fall term, the fifth graders explored different aspects of human rights, our theme for the year.

The students became familiar with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and discussed the meaning of each of the 30 articles. In December, they celebrated the culmination of the unit with a Human Rights Celebration while performing three skits based on what they learned in class.

In addition, students learned about Fair Trade and researched products under that category.  As part of the unit, we invited Graham Mitchell, President of Sustainable Innovations, Inc., to share with the students his expertise in fair trade. Graham’s job is to advise companies how to bring ethical and environmental credibility to their brands. His website is www.sustainableinnovations.com, if you would like more information about what Graham does.
