At Prudence Island, Science Students Get Up Close View of Ecosystem, Climate Impacts

AP Environmental Science recently went on a field trip to Prudence Island, the third-largest island in Narragansett Bay. This trip has become an annual excursion for this class. They spend the day studying invasive crab species, learning about the effects of climate change on the island, and exploring the biodiversity of the island's marshes.

This experience was made possible in partnership with the National Estuary Research Center. The group worked with the organization's educational director Maureen Dewire. She took the class to the salt marsh at low tide and taught the students about the biodiversity of the marsh and how climate change is altering the ecosystem. Maureen then took the students to the rocky shoreline where they learned how to collect data on the invasive Asian Shore Crab using different methods.
