Crocodiles, snakes, and cows in middle school, oh my! 6th grade explores ancient Egyptian deity representations

What were crocodiles and a snake doing in middle school?!? Oh wait, those are actually Ancient Egyptian Headdresses made for a history project this past spring.

For their Egyptian God/Goddess Research, 6th grade students were assigned an Egyptian God or Goddess to research using a variety of reading sources. Their final presentation aimed to teach their peers about a deity and its powers. Students were asked to include a hieroglyph (the writing system used in Ancient Egypt) of their god/goddess, and also to take a photo of themselves wearing their headdress.

Three students kindly modeled their headdresses and explained a bit about who they represented. The headdresses were made with a variety of materials such as cardboard, super glue, headbands, paint, and clay. The leftmost is “Hathor,” known as the mother, sky, and cow goddess. The middle and rightmost are representations of “Sobek,” the Egyptian crocodile god who was one of the oldest deities found in Egyptian hieroglyphs.
