An Independent, Coed, Friends School, Nursery Through Grade 12

For 6th grade a story of Holocaust survival, and an art project as remembrance

As they concluded their study of The Diary of Anne Frank, 6th grade invited a special guest, a local woman named Jeanne Gottfried to share her mother’s story of survival during the Holocaust. Her mother was part of KinderTransport, an organized rescue effort of European Jewish children between 1938–1939 during the nine months before the Second World War. Like many of these children, Jean’s mother was sent to an orphanage during the war. She also detailed her mother’s eventual journey to the United States.

Students also had the opportunity to partake in the Butterfly Project, which involves painting ceramic butterflies in a unique way as a show of support for resilience, hope, empathy, and social responsibility. By participating, participants take part in remembrance of the 1.5 million children who were killed during the Holocaust.

Once ready, these butterflies will be placed on display in middle school. Learn more at thebutterflyprojectnow.org.

Thanks to the Bornstein Holocaust Education Center in Providence for their help in coordinating these activities for our students!
