Investigating the Truth: 7th Grade Journalists Tackle the Flint Water Crisis

Seventh graders recently took part in a collaborative interdisciplinary project bridging English and science classes to explore the intersection of literature, history, and science. By pairing Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, An Enemy of the People – which centers on a doctor discovering bacterial contamination in a town's public baths – with the real-world Flint Water Crisis, students investigated how economic interests can suppress the truth. Working in specialized roles as investigative journalists, students analyzed the technical science behind water pollution, such as chemical pipe corrosion and lead leachability. Simultaneously, they sharpened their humanities skills through hard-hitting journalism, persuasive op-eds, and creative layout design. Ultimately, the project challenged students to think critically about civic responsibility, scientific integrity, and the heavy personal toll often paid by those who fight for the truth. To celebrate their hard work, the grade concluded the unit with a "publishing café" experience, where students proudly shared their finished newspapers, like The Poison Post, with their peers.
