Literature of War Class Visits the Naval War College in Newport

The upper school Literature of War classes visited the Naval War College in Newport on Monday. This trip was coordinated with the generous help of MB parent Heidi Lane P’25. She is a professor of strategy and policy at the Naval War College, and also the director of the Greater Middle East Research Study Group.

“The College offers higher level education for officers from around the United States and around the world. Heidi offered to plan a day for the Literature of War classes, and it was incredibly enriching and engaging,” said teacher Abby Phyfe.

They got a tour from Captain Mark Turner, who shared that the greatest war the country has ever won is the war that was prevented from occurring in the first place.

“The College teaches war history and tactics but also places a heavy emphasis on peace strategies and conflict prevention,” Abby added.

MB students listened to a panel that included four Americans from various branches of the military and jobs within them, as well as visiting students from Ukraine and Israel. The second panel focused on the College's elective course on Vietnam, hosted by the course's professors and several students. Our students were able to ask questions based on their study of war throughout the semester, and they deeply appreciated the opportunity.
