A group of eight upper school students represented Moses Brown School at the second annual Teen Mental Health Summit held at Rhode Island College on Friday, January 10. This was the second annual KyleCares Foundation event organized in association with the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL). MB’s participation was led by our school’s chapter of Active Minds led by seniors Alex Z., Gwen P., Hana S. and Lincoln K.. Active Minds groups are student-led, school-based groups that guide conversations around mental health and work toward culture change and advocacy within communities.
Senior Gwen P. shared this reflection about their experience at the summit:
“Attending the Teen Mental Health Summit was an incredibly inspiring experience. Last year, this same conference motivated us to take action, leading to the founding of the first-ever Active Minds club at Moses Brown. Through this initiative, we’ve hosted impactful mental health speakers, organized Green Out sports games to promote mental health awareness, and created fun, engaging activities to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
This year’s conference featured incredible guest speakers, including Jiggy Yoon, and covered vital topics such as recognizing signs of self-harm, developing coping skills, and the intersection of mental health and athletics. The experience was empowering, as we connected with other passionate students from Rhode Island and shared the work we’ve accomplished through Active Minds. We had the opportunity to share how we have implemented Active Minds at Moses Brown to help other schools follow suit. We’re so grateful for this opportunity and proud to be part of the movement to end the stigma around mental health."
