With a deep sense of gratitude, Moses Brown School is delighted to announce its receipt of an anonymous gift designated to transform the Waughtel-Howe Field House, multi-use courts and track, supporting student-athletes and enhancing overall student performance.
“The updated courts now feature a new Herculan flooring system installed by Sport Pro Surfacing,” notes Athletic Director AJ Kizekai. “Providing benefits such as increased shock absorption, slip resistance, and responsive ball rebound, this high-performing pad and polyurethane surface will help to improve safety, mitigate injury potential, and enable athletes to maximize their performance.”
Over the upcoming spring break in March, the indoor track will also be resurfaced with a Herculan flooring system and a thicker pad for shock absorption. The top layer will be finished off with rubber granules to allow for superb traction for our students to fully utilize the banked track, a feature that continues to make Waughtel-Howe Field House one of the most unique facilities in the North East. With these upgrades, the Waughtel-Howe Field House will continue a tradition of cutting-edge facility construction and enhancements.
Originally built in 1966, it pioneered the first-ever installation of AstroTurf, and its evolution included an expansion in 2000 to add strength training and medical facilities. The home of Moses Brown’s many championship-winning teams, the Field House is a vibrant community resource, helping student-athletes cultivate their best efforts and providing a fun and safe place for exercise and play for all students.
“The impact of this gift is immediate, far-reaching, and long-lasting,” says Director of Advancement Elizabeth Breidinger. "The Waughtel-Howe Field House is a vital hub for our entire community, supporting everyone from middle and upper school athletes to our lower and middle school PE students. The Field House promotes physical and mental wellness through activities that bring people together—whether it's cheering on the Quakers, summer camps, community events, or an impromptu game of pick-up. We are so appreciative of this generous display of stewardship by the donors.”
The philanthropic support of the Field House comes at a pivotal moment for Moses Brown, as Head of School Katie Titus, who began her tenure last year, prepares to announce the school’s strategic vision for 2034 at the school’s upcoming Stewarding our School event on January 28, 2025.
“We are committed to creating and maintaining exceptional facilities that support the evolving needs of our students and community,” declares Katie Titus. “Recent and planned investments in our campus reflect this dedication to fostering an environment that inspires learning, wellness, and connection. With this unexpected and generous gift in hand, we are excited about the momentum building in our community to support our strategic priorities, and we look forward to what’s on the horizon for Moses Brown School.”
