Science

Overview

The Science Department guides students in the study of the natural and physical sciences while nurturing a spirit of inquiry. The curriculum enriches the study of the natural world through field and laboratory work, as well as the study of scientific literature. Students also explore the history of science and the implications of science in modern life. Through these studies, students develop analytical thinking skills by applying the scientific method.

Course Requirements

A Moses Brown diploma requires four credits of laboratory science.
Most students take a Biology-Chemistry-Physics sequence.
An alternative path of Physics 9-Biology-Chemistry is also available for students who would benefit from a conceptual approach to physics while developing their mathematical skills.
The department offers a variety of yearlong and semester-long electives for students to explore specialized topics.
Advanced Placement and honors courses are available to students who meet prerequisites and receive a recommendation from the science department faculty. These courses are designed to provide a college-level learning experience and prepare students for the respective AP exams.

* Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, we will remove the AP designation from our courses. Some courses will still resemble AP courses, with teachers able to use their professional discretion to adapt and improve their curricula. Some courses will be entirely new. All courses taught at the advanced level will have a clear designation that will be communicated to students, families, and colleges.
