Kenya Service Leadership and Safari Trip – Amagoro, Kenya – East Africa | June 16 – July 4, 2017

This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 14 students to travel to Kenya on a 15-day trip that combines service, cultural learning opportunities, white water rafting on the head of the Nile River, and a safari in Masai Mara. In order to be ready to dive into the cross-cultural exchange once we arrive, in the months leading up to the trip, adult leaders will facilitate correspondence between the Moses Brown students and fellow high school students in Elewana’s program in Amagoro, Kenya. Through letters and other activities, the teenagers will begin to develop an appreciation for their varied cultures and worldviews.
In Kenya, students attend village schools where academics are rigorous, and national testing in the 8th grade determines their futures. Despite challenges of poverty, limited health care, and minimal school resources, children in these schools are eager to learn. They understand that education is their only path toward a more secure future for themselves. Elewana Education Project (www. elewana.org) is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that has worked for years to educate and empower Kenyan youth to bring about change in their own communities. Elewana’s Service and Leadership Program brings high school students from the U.S. and other countries for a two week stay at their mission house in Amagoro, Kenya.
