12th Grade

English

At Moses Brown, seniors are becoming literary scholars, creative writers, and thoughtful critics of text.  Those who have demonstrated a committed and earnest approach to the study of English are invited to take AP English, a full-year course that involves frequent writing exercises and intensive reading in poetry, fiction, drama, and non-fiction prose.  They study classics like The Odyssey, Sophocles’ Oedipus Cycle, Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost, Hamlet, To the Lighthouse, and Invisible Man.  Candidates for this class must exhibit a high level of interest in reading and writing about challenging literature and a willingness to engage actively in frequent discussions.  Students in this class are required to take the AP Literature & Composition exam.

Seniors have a broad menu of English electives available to them, many of which offer a level of challenge comparable to that of introductory college courses.  Students with a special interest in English may take an extra elective if space is available.
