12th Grade

Math

Twelfth grade students at Moses Brown generally enroll in Calculus, AP Calculus or electives like AP Statistics, Introduction to Statistics, Discrete Math, Macroeconomics, and The Economics of Social Innovation. Students in all courses use technology in the Y-Lab and software applications like MiniTab, Desmos, and Pycharm.

Some twelfth grade students enroll in Algebra III, Precalculus, or Multivariable Calculus, depending on previous coursework.

At every grade level, students are invited to participate in mathematics outside of the classroom including competing on the Upper School Math Team, representing our school in the New England Math League, participating in the annual American Mathematics Competition, and serving as a peer tutor.

Microeconomics is a college-level course that focuses on questions that affect families and small businesses.  Students will consider scarcity, efficiency, supply and demand, and production possibility frontiers.  They’ll also investigate elasticity, earnings and discrimination, and consumer choice, and ask interesting questions like, “Why do people buy insurance and lottery tickets?”

Macroeconomics is a college-level course that focuses on national-level questions of growth, unemployment, and inflation.  Juggling factors including gross domestic product, cost of living, investment returns, and the monetary system, students will understand how these complex factors affect supply and demand, and tackle policy questions like, “If the interest rate goes up, what effect with that have on national savings?”

AP Statistics follows the curriculum for the Advanced Placement exam given in May, and is equivalent to a half-year of college statistics.  Students in AP Statistics will study experimental design, probability, statistical inference, and data analysis.  Every student will design and conduct an experiment to analyze some aspect of life at Moses Brown, and present their findings to the entire school community.
