Athletics

People have known for millennia that a healthy body makes a healthy mind, and academic research has made this link clearer.  Exercise dramatically boosts cognitive ability, attentional control, and executive functions.

For seventh graders, physical education and wellness are focused on cooperation and culture-building group activities.  With fun games and activities, they improve their hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor movements, teamwork, and physical fitness.  Students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone in all activities, especially while completing the FitnessGram assessment, which includes tests of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.

All middle schools students are invited to participate in after-school sports, though they are not required.  Most children enjoy trying new sports, finding new things they like and new abilities in themselves.  Teams practice and play games up to four days per week.  Every middle school team emphasizes cooperation, sportsmanship, teamwork,  and the ability to win and lose graciously.  Most teams offer two levels of play.  An “”A”” team consists of the older more experienced players, while the “”B”” teams are comprised of newer players looking to develop their skills.
