9th Grade

Math

Ninth graders at Moses Brown typically study geometry or algebra.  At every grade in upper school, students with a passion and aptitude for mathematics can move beyond grade-level material with extra electives or summer courses (at Moses Brown or online), and join extracurricular activities like Math Olympiad.

In Geometry, we coach students to write formal proofs of two- and three-dimensional Euclidean geometry.  In studying lines, planes, congruency, polygons, similarity, Pythagorean relationships, circles, triangle trigonometry, area, and volume, we help ninth graders develop their spatial sense using logic and computational thinking.

Inquire

For those students new to Algebra, or who would like more support before moving on, we introduce content in discrete fifteen-minute chunks, then reinforce it with daily quizzes and homework review.  Students are asked to show their work on every problem, and through a series of real-world challenges, they grasp the utility of algebra in their lives: they ‘draw’ word problems, evaluate ramps for ADA compliance, and in one delicious lesson, explore linear regression by measuring the number of seconds it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop(TM).  By the end of the year, fear and intimidation have melted away, and students feel confident in their mathematical abilities.
