At every step of the way, we encourage children to use a variety of problem-solving strategies so they’ll have something else to try if their main approach doesn’t work. This builds both confidence and resilience, and we ask them always to explain their work. This can reveal hidden errors and strengths that might have gone unrecognized in the wake of an incorrect answer.
Throughout the year, we revisit several topics with increasing degrees of complexity and challenge, using the techniques of interval training to help children ‘sprint and rest’ as they absorb and digest material.
With daily math exercises, games, and practice, we develop children’s automaticity with addition and subtraction, 2- and 3-D geometry, and data analysis. We also introduce basic multiplication and fractions, preparing children for more rigorous work on these topics in third grade.
With regular assessments, and in coordination with Moses Brown’s lower school math specialist, we help children who are struggling and provide additional challenge for those who excel. Group work ensures that children of multiple levels learn from one another, and gives them valuable practice learning the social skills of balancing one’s contributions and support of teammates.
We also collaborate with the children on finding math in everyday life-in money, travel, and digital and analog clocks, we discover the many ways math is woven throughout our day.Inquire
